Thomas (Whitt) Wayne Whittemore Sr., 72 of Johnson City passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. Tom was a native of Carter County and had lived most of his life in Johnson City. He was the son of the late Theodore (Dick) and Mary Irene Haire Whittemore. Tom retired from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company after 34 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for Phil Bachman Toyota for over 10 years. Tom was also a lifetime member of the Johnson City Rescue Squad after giving over 20 years of faithful volunteer service. He also served as an umpire, official, referee and tournament director for the TSSAA, NSA and ASA including football, basketball and softball. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Travis Wayne Campbell and a brother, Jimmy Dean Whittemore. Tom leaves behind his faithful and loving wife of 51 years, Betty Samples Whittemore; also three children, Cynthia Diane Whittemore; Thomas Wayne Whittemore Jr. and his wife, Yvette and Eric Todd Whittemore and his wife, Pennie; seven grandchildren, Hollie, Heather and Haley Campbell, Justin, Trey, Ty and Lauren Whittemore: seven great-grandchildren, Brianna, Olivia, Deliah, Isaiah, Eli, Kendra and Ava Rose; a sister, Delores Whittemore Scott; a brother-in-law, John Samples; three sisters-in-law, Sharon Samples, Shelby Samples Head and Sarah Samples Zimmern; also several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service for Tom will be conducted at 8:00 PM Monday, April 9, 2012 in the Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Harold McNabb officiating. Music will be under the direction of Roddy Bird and Harold McNabb. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 5:30 PM until the service time. A committal service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be officials from the TSSAA, ASA and NSA also the employees of Phil Bachman Toyota. Everyone attending this service is asked to meet at the funeral home Tuesday by 10:30 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to express a special thank you to the nurses on the 4300 floor of the JCMCH for the loving care given to Mr. Whittemore during his final days.
