“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…” – 2 Timothy 4: 7-8Terry Lynn Abel, 64, of Johnson City, TN went home to be with the Lord on Sunday Evening, July 28th 2019.  Terry was born in Johnson City, TN to the late Rev. Gilbert and Grace Smith Abel, and preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Michael Abel.Terry attended ETSU where he played football after graduating from Hampton High School in 1972 as an all-conference/all-state football player.  Terry retired from Kennametal after 21 years to devote his full-time attention to his ministry.  He was the pastor of Second Baptist Church in Jonesborough from 1995-2001, then opened and pastored Bible Mission Church from 2001-2008. Even after retirement from the pastoring, he continued to actively serve the Lord ministering to those in need wherever he went.Terry was an avid sports fan, he loved his Tennessee Vols and Atlanta Braves.  He coached several generations of young athletes in a variety of sports, and was a mentor to many youths in the community.  Terry also loved his little min-pin Gracie, who gave him 16 years of joy and happiness before passing away in April.Terry’s greatest success and top priority (after his Lord Jesus), was his loving family.  He was survived by his wife (and mother to his children) Connie Howell Abel; eldest daughter Hannah Beth Abel (& fiancé Jonathan Parlier) of Johnson City, TN; youngest daughter Rebekah Lyn Abel Holt (& husband Greg Holt) of Morristown, TN; granddaughter (the love and joy of his life) Ellalyne “Ella” Elizabeth Abel Parlier; brother Larry G. Abel (wife Linda); sister Judy Broyles; several nieces and nephews: Lisa Broyles Jubenville (husband Doug); Larry Abel Jr. (wife Kim); Deanna Abel Johnson; Joy Abel; Kelsey Johnson; Lauren Jubenville; Keaton Johnson; Payton Jubenville; Sarah Renee Grillo; Haley Hankal (husband Jake, daughter Phoebe); and so many other loving family members.Funeral services for Terry will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City with Pastor Randy Johnson and Pastor Kenneth Grindstaff officiating. Music will be provided by Joy Abel and Robert Montgomery. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 2, 2019 in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be: Larry Abel Jr., Lamont Barnett, Jackie Cook, Gary Smith, Rob Montgomery, Doug Jubenville, Mike Abel, Lenny Smith, and Ronda Wayne Hodge  Honorary Pallbearers: Rev. Bob McCurry, Rev. Tim Chambers, Billy Jenkins; Allen Payne; Rick Shelton; John McDonnell; David McDonnell; Byrl Clark; Jr Clark; Jeff Clark; Tony Howell; all Hampton Bulldog teammates; Each and every young person he coached & mentored over the years in football, basketball, baseball/teeball; coworkers at Kennametal; congregations at Second Baptist Church and Bible Mission Church during his time as Pastor; his loving Aunt Betty Smith and all of his loving cousins; and all those he led to know his Lord and Savior Jesus. Terry was such a wonderful person and a true friend. Terry coached and mentored kids that will always remember his guidance not only in sports but in life itself.
