Stanley Blankenship, 90, 303 W. Watauga Avenue, Apt.# 2, Johnson City passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Unicoi County and was a son of the late Presley and Ellen Rice Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship retired from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC where he worked as a heating and cooling mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in Germany and was awarded six bronze stars, the American Defense Service Medal and the Purple Heart Medal. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by ten brothers and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Payne Blankenship; two step-daughters, Debbie Fitzgerald, Johnson City and Beth Foster of Unicoi; six step-grandchildren and three great-step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; he his also survived by his special friend and companion, his dog, Buddy. The funeral service for Mr. Blankenship will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Boone Dam VFW Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 11:30 AM until the service time.
