Samuel Preston Nelson, 55, 301 S. Barton Street, Johnson City passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 at his residence. He was a native of Carter County and a son of Laura Nickles Phillips of Fayetteville, NC and the late Paul Nelson. Mr. Nelson was self-employed and was a Christian by faith. Sam was an extraordinary man, who lived life to the fullest. He loved his wife and family and enjoyed spending time with his friends. He loved to golf, fish and play with his grandbabies. Survivors include his wife, Tammy Barnett Nelson of the home; his mothers, Ann Nelson of Johnson City and Laura Phillips of Fayetteville, NC; three sisters, Phyllis Nelson of Spring Lake, NC, Teresa Rhodes and husband, Gerald of Sanford, NC and Darlene Carroll and husband, Stan of Johnson City; two brothers, Steven Cochran of Fayetteville and Randy Carver of Johnson City; six daughters, Samantha Fisher and husband, Chris of Gray, Rebecca Watson, Johnson City, Tabatha Nelson, Bristol, VA, Kelsey Gage and husband, Ryan of Iowa, Emily Wolfe and husband, Jay of Iowa and Kathleen Nelson of Johnson City; two sons, Chris Nelson and wife, Brianna of Johnson City and Alex Nelson of Iowa; his mother and father-in-law, Nancy and Dallas Barnett of Jonesborough; fifteen grandchildren; ten nieces; five nephews and a special friend, Scott Hunter of Jonesborough. Funeral services for Mr. Nelson will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Curtis Hurt officiating. Special music will be provided by Becky McNeese. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 29, 2015 in the McCarty Cemetery in Telford. Pallbearers will be Chris Nelson, Bobby Ward, Cotton Nelson, Chad Barnett, Phillip Barnett and June Hall. For those attending this service you are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
