Dr. Robert Gene Shepard, age 87, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital.  Mr. Shepard was born on October 14, 1930, and was the son of the late Arthur and Myrtle Lewis Shepard.  Bob was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, East Tennessee State  University and the University of Tennessee- Knoxville.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Doris Treadway Shepard; brothers, Bill P. Shepard and Elmer R.  Shepard.Survivors include his wife, Mary Shepard; children, Kathy S. MacLucas and husband Ed, Robert A. Shepard and wife Annette; grandchildren, Katie MacLucas, John MacLucas, Michael Shepard and wife Cynthia, and Brandon Shepard; great grandchildren,  Makenzie, Austin, Haylie, Kelsey, and Brayden Shepard; sisters, Mary Louise Trusler and Doris Richardson, a special step-grandson, Ryan Dillow and many nieces and nephews.He was a member of Eden United Methodist Church.Mr.  Shepard proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving in the 80th Division Artillery, and was stationed in Italy and Germany.  He was also in the Army Reserve where he retired with the rank of Colonel.Mr. Shepard earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees in Education from E.T.S.U.  He later earned his Ed.D in Supervision and Administration from U.T- Knoxville.  Mr. Shepard taught at E.T.S.U until his retirement in 1988.  He then owned and operated Cherokee Educational Consultants until 2014.The graveside services for Mr. Shepard will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Roselawn Memory Gardens with military honors being presented by the Carter County Honor Guard.  Those who wish to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 P.M. I will never forget the kindness and empathy shown by Dr. Shepard during my studies at E.T.S.U.  Dr. Shepard did not hesitate to provide the help I needed. His kindness contributed greatly to the completion of my degree.  May God bless his family during this difficult time.

ETSURA, East Tennessee State University Retirement Association, extends many thoughts and prayers from each member for Dr. Shepard's family.  As a professor at ETSU, Dr. Shepard touched many students and made many friends.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
