Robert "Bob" Schilling, 91, passed away at his home in Johnson City, TN Wednesday, February 12, 2014 after a five month battle with esophageal cancer. A 43 year resident of Waveland, Mississippi, Bob moved to Johnson City after hurricane Katrina in 2005. Bob loved living near his sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in the mountains for the past 8 years. He was born in Norfolk, VA and was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Evelyn Smith Schilling in 1997; his parents, L.O. and Minnie Swain Schilling; two brothers, Dr. L.O. "Bruiser" Schilling and Earl Schilling. Bob graduated from Mt. Herman High School and entered the U.S. Navy in June 1941 and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After retiring from the Navy in 1962 he moved to Waveland, MS and worked in the space industry at Michoud Assembly Facility and Stennis Space Center for over 20 years. Bob was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church in Bay St. Louis, MS prior to relocating to Johnson City, and then he attended McKinley Memorial Bible Church. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Pass Christian Isles Golf Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 77 in Waveland, MS as well as the Waveland Civic League. His generous and loving spirit will be greatly missed by family and friends. Bob is survived by his sons, Robert Schilling and wife, Esther of Matthews, NC and Richard Schilling and wife, Jan of Smyrna, TN; a daughter, Penny Bise and husband, Gulfport, MS; a sister, Evelyn "Sis" Diamond of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Travis Schilling, Robin Harbour, Rick Schilling, Beth Twomey, Kelty Bise and Devon Bise; five great-grandchildren. Bob also leaves behind a long-time friend and companion, Helen Paul of Hattiesburg, MS. A memorial service will be conducted at McKinley Memorial Baptist Church, Johnson City at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 15, 2014 with Rev. Lenny Smith officiating.
