G. Bruce Kidd of Johnson City passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born to Gates W. and Helen M. Kidd on March 6, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Kidd was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended and graduated Georgia Tech with a B.S. in Industrial Management. While there he served as features editor of the school newspaper. Mr. Kidd received two honorary awards for Industrial Management Society and Pi Delta Epsilon for journalism. He was elected president of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. Mr. Kidd moved to Johnson City in 1938 when his father purchased Tennessee Motor Company. He was active in civic affairs and was elected president of the Board of Directors of Memorial Hospital, now known as the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Kidd was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Community Chest, now called the United Way. He served as chairman of the board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City. Mr. Kidd received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Junior Chamber of Commerce for being the outstanding young man of 1961. He was a Mason, Shriner, Kiwanian and a member of the Hurstleigh Club. Mr. Kidd was co-owner of Tennessee Motor Company for 52 years and retired in 2002 when he and his son sold the business to Ramey Ford Lincoln Mercury. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mildred Greene Kidd in 2011. Survivors include a son, Michael Bruce Kidd and his wife, Teresa of Gray; a daughter, Linda Susan Kidd of Charlotte, NC. a grandson, Andrew Kidd and his wife, Lauren; a grandson, Charles Jeremy Fletcher; a granddaughter, Whitney Smotherman; three great-grandchildren, Spider, Wednesday and Dagger Smotherman all of Johnson City. Graveside services for Mr. Kidd will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, January 12, 2015 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Anna Butler officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW Honor Guard Detail. For those attending you are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 PM.
