Frank Graham Stewart

Dr. Frank Graham Stewart, composer, musician, educator and father passed away peacefully at Johnson City Medical Center, Monday, May 7, 2012. Dr. Stewart was a retired professor who spent his life both composing and educating others in the art of music. Dr. Stewart was born December 12, 1920 in Colorado and attended Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York before enlisting in the Army during WWII. After the war he settled in California where he pursued his music career. It was later that he began to develop the love of teaching and after teaching a year at the University of Missouri, in 1971 he completed his doctorate in music composition and theory at Michigan State University then moved to Mississippi where he taught music theory and composition at Mississippi State University until his retirement in 1986. He continued to compose and teach, even writing a composition for the Johnson City School Orchestra when his grandson, Frank was a member. In addition to his music, he loved to trout fish and enjoyed his garden. Dr. Stewart was a past president of the Southeastern Composers League and member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was an accomplished clarinetist and composer and had his music performed as far away as Warsaw, Poland by the Warsaw Philharmonic. Dr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther Higgins Stewart; a sister, Virginia Leigh Stewart and his wife of 60 years, Johanna Lily Stewart. Survivors include a daughter, Terry Carroll and her husband, Kenneth of Johnson City and two grandsons, Glenn Calkins and Frank Carroll. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, 112 E. Myrtle Ave. #503, Johnson City, TN 37601 whose music he greatly enjoyed.
