Ellen "Lena" Johnson, 71, 1000 Long Street, Johnson City went home to join her Heavenly family Sunday, November 30, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and was the daughter of the late David and Elsie Houston Nichols. Lena was retired from the Johnson City Medical Center where she had worked for 37 years. She enjoyed gardening, canning food and watching Bob Smallwood and Dr. Charles Stanley on television. Lena loved her family and had never met a stranger. She will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Ernest Johnson in 2007 and a brother, Millard D. Nichols. Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Hodge Smotherman and husband, Wendell of Jonesborough; two sons, Tommy "Casey" Johnson and wife, Toya and David Allen Johnson and wife, Veronica all of Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Amanda Hodge, Sarah Schurch, Harrison Braden, Joshua Vest, Alexandra Johnson, James Smotherman and Mandy Phipps; several great-grandchildren including a special great-granddaughter, Lana "Corn Gravy" Phipps and a special great-grandson, Gabriel Noel Soto; a special cousin, Sandra Haworth; also several cousins. Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 4, 2014 in the Southwestern Baptist Church, 1112 Cherokee Road, Johnson City with Pastor Greg Salyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City. The family would like to offer special thanks to all of the nurses of the Johnson City Medical Center 2500 floor and the JCMC Hospice Group for the wonderful care they provided.
