Edward Ray Brewer, 91, 1709 East Fairview Avenue, Johnson City passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Marble, NC and had lived in Johnson City for most of his life. Mr. Brewer was a son of the late A.R. and Betty Brewer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served his country during World War II and later served in the Army National Guard. Mr. Brewer retired from Burlington Industries and was also a licensed electrician. He was a member of the East Unaka Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Sparks Brewer in 1998; a brother, Robert Brewer and a sister, Ella Barham. Survivors include a son, Eddie Brewer of Johnson City; a daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Fortner and husband, Tom of Boston, VA; three grandchildren, Scott Fortner, Chicago, Jeff Fortner and wife, Emily of Seattle, WA and Steve Fortner and wife, Gloria of Bealeton, VA; five great-grandchildren. Graveside services with Military Honors for Mr. Brewer will be conducted at 12:30 PM Saturday, November 16, 2013 in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Bobby Barham, Steve and Scott Fortner. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 noon then proceed to the cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to Kathy and Emily Ferguson for their care and compassion.
