Claude L. Mathes, 87, 1605 E. Millard Street, Johnson City passed away Friday, December 27, 2013 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and had lived in Dallas, Texas from 1968 to 1980 before returning to Johnson City. Mr. Mathes was a son of the late Will and Emma Bowers Mathes. He had worked in security before retiring. Mr. Mathes was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Duvall Mathes; his second wife, Thelma Mitchell Mathes; a brother, Rudy Mathes; a sister, Louise Cox; a step-son, Earl Crum and a granddaughter, Amber Perkins. Survivors include his wife, Lizzie Bell Paul Mathes; a son, Norman Mathes and wife, Nila of Johnson City; three step-daughters, Alice Perkins and husband, Jason of Johnson City, Christine Garland and husband, Buddy of Gray and Nancy Ball of Green Mountain, NC; a step-son, Ray Crum and wife, Betty of Elizabethton; a brother, Carroll Mathes and wife, Betty Jo of Elizabethton; two sisters, Betty Guinn Stout of Elizabethton and Buena Stufflestreet of Vernon, FL; six grandchildren, Brittany Branch, Anthony Stewart, Justin Perkins, Cody Perkins, Buddy Garland Jr. and Catheryn Garland; three great-grandchildren, Braylon Horton, Eric Branch and Braydon Stewart; also several nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mr. Mathes will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 31, 2013 in the Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor William Lunsford officiating. Pallbearers will be Joseph and Robby Mathes, Buddy Garland, Kevin Perkins and Danny and Jason Herrell. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM.. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, December 30, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.
