Clarence "C.W." Smith, 71, 364 Riverview Drive, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 17, 2013 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and was a son of the late Rev. M.D. Smith and Nancy Jane Hyatt Smith. Mr. Smith was owner and operator of Riverview Paint and Body Shop for many years. He was a member of the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon for 44 years; he had also served as the Youth Choir Director, Greeter and Sunday School Superintendant. Mr. Smith was a loving husband, father and papaw. He was a friend to all and always had a smile for everyone. He will truly be missed by all who ever knew him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Smith, Bill Smith and M.D. Smith Jr.; a sister, Geneva Smith; his mother and father-in-law, Gladys and Holt Bailey and a special aunt and uncle, Ida and Clarence Smith. Survivors include his best friend and loving wife of 49 years who faithfully stood by him during his illness, Sara Lynn Bailey Smith; a son, Rev. Richard Smith and his wife, Wendy of Limestone; a daughter, Karen Holtzsclaw and her husband, David of Johnson City; four brothers, Vernon Smith and Kathy, George Smith and his wife, Beverly, Jerry Smith and his wife, Helen all of Johnson City and Jim Wexler and his wife, Joan of Kentucky; a sister, Linda Carver and her husband, Jim of Johnson City; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Marshall, Florida and Anita Smith of Gray; three grandchildren, Corey Smith, Telford, Natasha Smith, Limestone and Chelsea Ackermann and her husband, Alex of Johnson City; a great-granddaughter, Liliana Ackermann of Johnson City; three aunts, Ruby Tester, June Frye and Dory Saults; other family members, the Bailey family; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 6:00 PM Sunday, January 20, 2013 in the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Lakeview Drive, Johnson City with the Rev. Paul Crowe, Rev. Donnie Humphrey and Rev. Richard Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday from 3:00 PM until the service hour and other times at the home, 364 Riverview Drive, Johnson City. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 21, 2013 in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be J.D. Buck, Farrell Bennett, Howard Ray, Byrl Fann, Charlie Campbell and Corey Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the preachers, deacons and men of the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the church Monday by 10:30 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to the DaVita Dialysis Group of Johnson City, Dr. Henry Ooi and staff including Lisa, Stephanie and Mary at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Stanley Vermillion and his staff and to Dr. Kahn for the wonderful care they provided during Mr. Smith's illness.
