Rolland Edward Dickenson

Rolland Edward Dickenson, 81, 105 Woodlawn Drive, Johnson City passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 in the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center. He was a native of Wise County, VA and had lived in Euless, Texas before moving to Johnson City in 2000. Mr. Dickenson was the son of the late Rev. C.B. and Lela Stallard Dickenson. He was a self-employed truck driver and had served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Dickenson was a member of the East Watauga Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Ron Dickenson and his wife, Judy, Big Stone Gap, VA, John Dickenson, Johnson City and Rev. Mike Dickenson and his wife, Peggy of Johnson City; a daughter, Lou Ann Fricks and her husband, Bob of Euless, Texas; five grandchildren. The funeral service for Mr. Dickenson will be conducted 10:00 AM Friday, July30, 2010 from the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. James Chatman and Rev. Kenneth Chatman officiating. Music will be provided by the Duggers. Burial will follow with Military Rites in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning from 9:00 AM until service time.

 

Howard S. Waycaster

Howard S. Waycaster, 73, 345 Lynn Road, Johnson City passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 22, 2010. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson City and was a son of the late Steve and Bonnie Bunton Waycaster. Mr. Waycaster was employed by East Tennessee State University where he had worked for 21 years as a painter. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon since 1963 and had been the church treasurer since 1973. He also had been the church care taker for 15 years. Mr. Waycaster served his country in the U.S. Air force. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his darling wife, Evelyn Waycaster who passed away February 18 of this year, also two sisters, Ruth Davidson and Mary Lee Rodeback, a brother, Charles Waycaster and a son-in-law, Roger Davis. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Robin Clark, Sandra Gail Davis and Donna K. Corbett and her husband, Robert all of Johnson City; a brother, Jack Waycaster, Johnson City; two grandsons, Chad Johnson, Dallas, TX and Steven Bates, Johnson City; two granddaughters, Shelly Davis and Ashley Johnson both of Johnson City; three great-granddaughters, Katie Johnson, Lindsey Johnson and Julie Carver; three great-grandsons, Jackson, Peyton and Levi Carver; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Waycaster will be conducted 3:00 PM Sunday, July 25, 2010 from the Calvary Baptist Church, Hart Avenue, Johnson City with the Rev. James Chatman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday from 1:30 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 26, 2010 from the Monte Vista Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW Honor Guard assisted by the National Guard. Pallbearers will be Mike Davidson, Larry Glaspie, Chris and Randy Waycaster, Steven Bates, Robert Corbett, Rick Holmes and R.B. Ramsey. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.

 

Esper Farrell Willis

Esper Farrell Willis, 62, 205 Delaware Street, Johnson City passed away at his residence Monday, July 19, 2010. He was a native of Swaynesville, NC and a son of the late Richard and Edna Willis. Mr. Willis was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had worked in maintenance most of his life. He is survived by several brothers and sisters. A private graveside service will be held at the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

 

Winifred (Winnie) Grimes

Winifred (Winnie) Grimes, 84, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Virginia McGruder Thomas. Winnie was one of 8 children and was the last to pass on. She grew up in Potomac, MD on an 800 acre farm with grandparents and extended family. She moved to Washington, DC and attended school there and married John Grimes, Esquire.  Winnie then moved to Staten Island, NY and adopted two daughters, Carol Anne and Mary Grimes. In addition to her daughters she is survived by five grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Winnie will be conducted, 2:00 PM Thursday, July 22, 2010 in the Washington County Memory Gardens with Chaplain Allyson Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 12:30 until 1:30 PM then proceed to the cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to all of the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center, the Caris Hospice group and to Dr. Jerry Gastineau.

 

 

Kelly Kristin Fields

Kelly Kristin Fields, age 29, of 117 Bart Green Dr., Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010 in  Gray, TN.  A lifelong resident of Johnson City, she was a daughter of Pat Gentry Fields, Johnson City, and the late Kenneth Dean Fields, who passed away in 1998.   Ms. Fields attended Daniel Boone High School.  She loved her family and enjoyed all types of photography.  In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Ray Gentry, and paternal Grandparents, Claude and Joyce Fields.

Survivors in addition to her mother include a daughter, Hayley Fields, Johnson City; 2 brothers, Chad Fields, Johnson City, Mike Fields, Jonesborough; Maternal Grandmother, Mary Gentry, Johnson City; two aunts, Janice Busler, and husband, Terry, Debbie Carver and husband, Danny; six uncles, Danny Gentry and wife Charlotte, Robin Gentry, Jimmy Fields, and wife Judy, Wayne Fields, and wife Margaret, Larry Fields, and wife Debbie, and Billy Hill and wife Diana; companion, Brandon Ratliff, Gray.

The Apostolic Christian Church, Emmanuel Drive, Johnson City, will conduct a memorial service for Ms. Fields on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 7:00 P.M.  with Pastor Ed Davis officiating. 

 

 

Rev. James W. Street

 

Rev. James W. Street, 77, 2312 Eastside Avenue, Johnson City passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and had lived in Johnson City since 1963. Mr. Street was a son of Sally Sparks Street of Tipton Hill, NC and the late Fred Street. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served his country in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Street was a licensed Freewill Baptist Minister and was a member of the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Hollyfield. Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 53 years, Rose Hagy Street; a daughter, Nancy Honeycutt and her husband, Dallas, Jonesborough; two sons, Larry W. Street and his wife, Elenia, Erwin and Ronald Lee Street and his wife, Jennifer, Gray; six brothers, Kenneth Street and his wife, Verna, Gray, Eugene Street and his wife, Shelby, Lewisburg, NC, Junior Street and his wife, Patsy, Red Hill, NC, Floyd Street and his wife, Grace, Spruce Pine, NC, Ronnie Street and his wife, Shelby and Wayne Street and his wife, Diane all of Bakersville, NC; a sister, Doris Street, Burnsville, NC; two grandsons, Austin Lee Street and Joshua Honeycutt; a granddaughter, Ashley Rose Street; extended family, Megan Hawkins and Glenn Williams; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Street will be conducted Friday, July 2, 2010 at 8:00 PM in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Crowe and Dr. Gene Lasely officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:00 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, July 3, 2010 from the Snyder’s Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone attending is asked to meet at the funeral home by 9:30 AM to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to the entire staff of Life Care Center of Gray and especially Monica Price and the station 3 staff for the wonderful care they provided.

 

 

 

Lois D. Martin

Lois D. Martin, 78, Johnson City, passed away in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Lombard, Illinois and resided at the Broadmore Assisted Living Residence in Johnson City. Mrs. Martin received a BA degree from the University of Michigan and an MA from Stanford University. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and Pi Delta Kappa teaching fraternity. Mrs. Martin lived overseas for most of her life, first as a member of the Experiment in International Living, then as an exchange student in Germany and later she accompanied her husband to Columbia and Libya, where he was employed as a micro paleontologist and petroleum geologist for Chevron Oil Company. A love of people and an interest in different cultures led Mrs. Martin and her family to travel extensively in Africa and Europe while living in Libya for 13 years. A teacher by profession, Mrs. Martin taught in California, Libya, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. After retiring from her position as a German and Spanish teacher with the U.S. Department of Defense in Naples, Italy she bought a centuries old Italian farmhouse on the Tuscan-Umbrian border. She turned it into a charming B&B where she enjoyed showing her guests the local sights and where many of her visitors became good friends. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Martin and her parents, Edwin and Alma Deicke. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Rolen and a son-in-law, Dr. Richard Rolen, Johnson City and a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Mary martin and granddaughters, Alayasha and Sophia Martin, Elizabethton. A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 4:00 PM at the Carnegie Hotel with the Reverend Bedford Transou officiating. The service will be followed by a gathering of family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Johnson City Medical Center and Broadmore Assisted Living for their outstanding care and contagious smiles. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ETSU Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology.

 

 

Stacey N. Price

Stacey N. Price, age 25, of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 14, 2010 in Unicoi, TN.  She was born in York, PA on September 13, 1984, but has lived the past 14 years in Johnson City.  She was a daughter of Tom and Kim Price, Johnson City.  Stacey was so carefree and loving.  She loved her friends, her job and attending E.T.S.U.  She was attending East Tennessee State University to obtain her bachelors degree and worked at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, Occupational Health Division.   She often went with many of her friends to Tybee Island, GA, where she really loved the beach.  She was a precious daughter and friend.  She was our whole life and will be sadly missed by her family and her hundreds of friends who were also her family.  Wait for us in Heaven!

Stacey was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Etta Good.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Tom Price, Jr., and wife Trayce Roberts-Price, Elizabethton; and their son Keylan Roberts-Price; Sister and brother-in-law, Shannon Francois, and husband, Solomon, and their daughter Trinity Marie Francois, Tampa, FL; maternal grandfather, Steven Good, York, PA; maternal grandparents, Tony and Sandy Davenport, Mechanicburg, PA.  Several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews also survive.   

A Celebration of life service will be held for Stacey on Friday, June 18, 2010 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Tolley

 

Robert Tolley, age 67, of 135 Tolley Lane, Erwin, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, June 11, 2010 at his residence following a lengthy illness.  He was a lifelong native of Erwin and was a son of the late Claude Tolley and the late Ruth Bennett Morgan.  Mr. Tolley was a veteran of the U.S Air Force and served during the Vietnam Era.  He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Erwin, and attended Maranatha Tabernacle, Unicoi.  Mr. Tolley was a loving husband, father and friend.  He never met a stranger and loved to make people laugh and he had a giving personality.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Tolley was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Williams and a brother, Junior Tolley.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Tolley, of the home; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael Tolley, and wife Amy, Boones Creek, Robert Tolley, and wife Karen, Greenwood, SC, Richard Tolley, Erwin, and Ronnie Tolley, and wife Karen, Greenwood, SC; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cynthia Tolley, Erwin, Tammy Bennett and husband Kyle, Greenville, SC, and Lori Brackins and husband Ben, Erwin; four sisters, Bonnie Sturgill and Lucille Woodby, both of Erwin, TN, Evelyn Huskins and husband Freddy, and Carolyn Auelar and husband Bob, all of Augusta, GA.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Tolley will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 14, 2010 at Faith Baptist Church, Temple Hill Rd., Erwin, TN with Rev. Craig Shelton and Mr. Kyle Bennett officiating.  The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of Faith Baptist Church.  

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. from the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN.  Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 P.M. Tuesday.  Active pallbearers will be selected from the family. 

 

 

Guy Hoilman

 

Guy Hoilman, 82, 156 Jarrett Buck Loop, Johnson City passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Bakersville, NC and had lived in Johnson City most of his life. Mr. Hoilman was a son of the late Vince and Dora Lee Ledford Hoilman and a charter member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church. He was a well known bass singer having sung for 52 years with several quartets, including The Song Masters, The Blevins Trio, The Singing Duggers and The Royal Heirs Quartet. Many will remember Guy from the J. Norton Arney Show that was featured on WJHL TV for many years. Mr. Hoilman was a lifetime member of the Gideon’s International and was a WW II veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He started the Hoilman Charolais Farm and was an avid coon hunter and fisherman. Mr. Hoilman was retired from Toyota of Kingsport and previously had worked at Tennessee Motor Company, Arney Motors and Pet Dairy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd, Landon and Robert Hoilman; a sister, Stella Blevins; and a granddaughter, Whitney Hoilman. Survivors include his wife, Sue Day Hoilman, they were married August 31, 1957 at the Old Log Church at Sinking Creek Baptist Church; two sons, Tim Hoilman and his wife, Gail of Harrisonburg, VA and Bryan Hoilman and his wife, Amy of Johnson City; a sister, Cora Lee Hoilman, Johnson City; two grandsons, Clinton Eli Hoilman and Seth Chance Hoilman; many nieces, nephews and extended family. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 8:00 PM Saturday, June 5, 2010 from the Sinking Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Toonie Cash, Rev. Reece Harris and Mr. Mark Harris officiating. Music will be provided by Queenie Dugger Wheeler and the Blevins Family. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 5:00 PM until service time. Graveside and entombment services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, June 6, 2010 in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Clint, Seth, Jimmy and R.L. Hoilman, Bill Sluder and David Dugger. Honorary pallbearers will be Sye Tester, Stanley Whitington, Bob Blevins, Blevins Family and all of the Praying Mountain Men. Everyone attending this service is asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Gideon’s International – North Camp, P.O. Box 3695, Johnson City, TN 37602-3695 or the St. Judes Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family would like to thank the caregivers of the V.A. Hospital, Phyllis Hughes and a multitude of friends for all of their love and support.

 

 

Terry D. Lewallen

 

Terry D. Lewallen, 43, 170 Hidden Oaks Drive, Johnson City passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 23, 2010. He was a native of Johnson City and had lived in Harlan and Hazard, Kentucky before moving back to Johnson City. He was the son of Linda Jones Sands of Johnson City. Mr. Lewallen was an employee of Inland Container of Elizabethton and loved the outdoors, especially riding his ATV. He was preceded in death by four uncles, Beryl, Larry, Darrell and Conrad Jones; an aunt, Maryland Brewer. In addition to his mother he is survived by his step-father, Kenneth Sands; a sister, Robin Culp, Johnson City; an aunt, Billie Combs, Johnson City; two uncles, Leon Jones, Erwin and Marvin Jones and his wife, Alice, Virginia; two nephews, Justin Lewallen and Zachary Culp; also several cousins. The funeral service for Terry will be conducted 7:00 PM Thursday, May 27, 2010 from the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold McNabb officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5:00 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 28, 2010 in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from his family and friends. Everyone attending is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 AM Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.

 

 

 

Hubert Howell

Hubert Howell, 83, 2016 King Springs Road, Johnson City passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Unicoi County but had lived in Johnson City most of his life. Mr. Howell was the son of the late Bernie and Lee Whaley Howell. He had worked for Bolton Block Company and was a Baptist by faith. Mr. Howell was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Ida Tipton Howell; his first wife, Nettie Cretsinger Howell; a step-son, Mark Teeple. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Harshbarger Howell; two sons, Jim Howell and his girlfriend, Joyce Deel, Johnson City and Verlin Howell and his wife, Judy, Erwin; a granddaughter, Laura France and her husband, David, Jonesborough; a great-granddaughter, Paige France, Jonesborough; a step-daughter, Karen Smith, Johnson City; a step-son, Bob Teeple, Nashville; three step-granddaughters; a step-great-granddaughter; seven half-sisters; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mr. Howell will be conducted 1:00 PM Monday, May 24, 2010 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Kaye Florence officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW Post # 4933 assisted by the Army National Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM then go in procession to the cemetery.  The family would like to thank all of the nurses of Caris Healthcare for the wonderful care they provided.

William Homer Hilton

William Homer Hilton, 78, 810 Kentucky Street, Johnson City passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 in the Life Care Center of Gray. He was a native of Unicoi County but had lived most of his life in Washington County. Mr. Hilton was a son of the late Samuel and Bertha Francis Hilton and had been employed by Leon-Ferenbach Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served his country in the Korean conflict. Mr. Hilton was a Christian by faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Albert, Brad and Clyde Hilton. Survivors include two brothers, Rev. Ted Hilton and his wife, Mary Ann of Johnson City and J.D. Hilton and his wife, Belva of Lakewood, CA; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; also several cousins. The funeral service for Mr. Hilton will be conducted 3:00 PM Sunday from the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Harris and the Rev. David Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 PM until the service time. Burial is pending at the Mountain Home National Cemetery and will be announced later.

 

Michael E. (Mike) Sanders

Michael E. (Mike) Sanders, 53, 1830 Johnson City Highway, Erwin passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 16, 2010 in the Unicoi County Hospital. He was a native of Johnson City and had lived in Baltimore before moving to Unicoi County. Mr. Sanders was a son of Agnes Honeycutt Sanders of Erwin and the late William Frank Sanders. He had worked as a floor mechanic for himself and several different companies. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother Kenneth Sanders and a sister, Lisa Sanders. Survivors in addition to his mother include a daughter, Kristen Bringhurst and her husband, Steve of Fort Hood, TX; two brothers, Keith Sanders and his wife, Delaine, Jonesborough and Norman Sanders of Kingsport; a sister, Robin Scholten and her husband, Steve of Gray; a granddaughter, Carley Bringhurst; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Sanders will be conducted 7:00 PM Friday, May 21, 2010 in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Helms officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 22, 2010 in the Edgefield Cemetery, Piney Flats. Pallbearers will be Wayne Blankenbeckler, Keith and Norman Sanders, Steve Scholten, Pete Sanders and Chuck Nelms. Everyone attending is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM.

 

Gregory Lynn Sexton

 

Gregory Lynn Sexton, 43, 735 Sulphur Springs Road, Jonesborough passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the home of his grandmother in Johnson City. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of Bobby and Betty Campbell Sexton of Jonesborough. Mr. Sexton was a truck driver and was a member of Douglas Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He loved fishing, racing and listening to the preaching of Dr. Joel Osteen. Mr. Sexton also loved  children and had a great sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Thelma Sexton and his maternal grandfather, Robert Campbell. Survivors in addition to his parents include a daughter, Aleigha Sexton and her husband, Steven Martin, Jonesborough; a brother, Keith Lynn Sexton and his wife, Amy, Gray; two sisters, Karen Sexton, Jonesborough and Kristi Blankenship and her husband, Mike, Johnson City; his maternal grandmother, Hassie Bennett Campbell, Johnson City; also seven nieces and   one nephew. The graveside service for Mr. Sexton will be conducted 2:30 PM Friday, May 14, 2010 in the Fairview Cemetery, Hwy. 81, Jonesborough with Pastor Wayne Cole officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM then travel in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

 

 

Roy Clark Jr.

 

Roy Clark Jr., 83, 1700 Carter Avenue, Johnson City passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Wise, Virginia but had lived most of his life in Johnson City. Mr. Clark was a son of the late Roy and Lillian Russell Clark. He was a carpenter by trade and was a member of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Charity Marie Hicks Clark in 2006; a daughter, Geneva Tapp and a son, David Clark. Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Susie Clark, Marie Jane Clark Smith and Dorene Sandra Clark all of Johnson City; four brothers, Speedy Clark, Delaware, Jimmy Clark, Virginia,  Danny Clark and Ronnie Clark both of Maryland; seven grandchildren, Ethel, Michael and Wendy Tapp, Amanda and Zachary Smith, Matthew and Nicole McCombs; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The graveside service for Mr. Clark will be conducted 2:30 PM Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in the Washington County Memory Gardens with Pastor Roy Reed officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM then go in procession to the cemetery.

 

Charles (Eddie) Farley Jr.

Charles (Eddie) Farley Jr., 45, formerly of 408 University Parkway, Johnson City, Tennessee passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 30, 2010 in Johnson City. He was a native of Danbury, Connecticut and had lived most of his life in Johnson City. Mr. Farley was a son of the late Charles and Nancy Goodwin Farley.  Eddie enjoyed  fishing and working on cars, and loved playing the game yatzee. He also loved playing with his sister’s dog Max.  He was a good friend to anyone that was in need of help.   In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Whitaker.  Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Cash of Johnson City and Betty Lowe of Erwin;   a brother, Tom Whitaker of Jonesborough; a niece and several nephews. The family would like to thank a special friend, Stanley Bowser who showed love, help and support. Timothy Edward Keenan

Timothy Edward Keenan, 61, 1314 Clear Springs Road, Limestone, Tennessee passed away Monday, April 26, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was a native of Batavia, New York and was a son of the late Thomas and Virginia Thompson Keenan. Mr. Keenan was a truck driver having worked for several trucking firms through the years. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam where he served with distinction and was awarded the Purple Heart and an Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Keenan was a graduate of Genesee Community College of Batavia. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Debra Miller Keenan in 2008; also three brothers, Michael, Arthur and Thomas Keenan. Survivors include a brother, James Keenan and his wife, Monica of Falls Church, VA; a sister, Patricia Keenan of Leroy, NY and several nieces and a nephew. Roger W. Vanhoy, 58, 210 S. Third Street, Watauga passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and was a son of the late Charles and Alma Vest Vanhoy. Mr. Vanhoy was employed with Berry Heating and Air Co. and attended the Hawthorne Brethren Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherrill and Robert Vanhoy. Survivors include three daughters, Deana Vanhoy, Watauga, Chrystal Governale and her husband, James, Louisiana and Rita Vanhoy, Watauga; a sister, Evelyn Gregg and her husband, Theodore, Johnson City; a brother, Jerry Vanhoy and his wife, Susan, Watauga; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Teresa Vanhoy, Watauga; four grandchildren, Jake Vanhoy, Justin and Gracie Governale and Jalyn Vanhoy; special family members, Eddie, Chuck and Wayne Vanhoy and Harry Cable; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 PM Saturday, May 1, 2010 from the Hawthorne Church of the Brethren, Riverview Drive, Johnson City with the Rev. Hollace Ford officiating.

 

 

Hobert Rice, 79, Jonesborough passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Rice was a native of Madison County, North Carolina but had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a son of the late Bulo and Rosa Lee Holland Rice. Mr. Rice was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of Gordon’s Furniture. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Driver. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Jones and her husband, Mark of Horseshoe, NC; a sister, Hathaway Briggs and her husband, Arnold, Jonesborough; a brother, Homer Rice and his wife, Eula Kate of Unicoi; four grandchildren, Joseph Driver, Amanda Caudill, Amber Melton and Leonard Andrew Vestal; six great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Rice will be conducted 8:00 PM Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Keasling officiating. Music will be provided by Mr. Virgil Gilbert. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until the service time. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 21, 2010 in the Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be John Wood, Keith and Mark Rice, Larry Balthis, Tyler, Austin and Dylan Britt. Everyone attending is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 AM. Steve M. Chatman

Steve M. Chatman, 49, 104 Delmer Saults Road, Gray passed away Saturday, April 10, 2010 at his residence with his family at his side. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Rev. Earl and Ruby Steen Chatman. Mr. Chatman was an ordained minister and had pastored New Victory Baptist Church, Clifton View Baptist Church and Enon Baptist Church. Also he was caretaker for 11 years at the Sullivan Baptist Retreat Center. He was a Tennessee State Electrical Inspector for Sullivan and Washington County. Mr. Chatman was also the owner and operator of Chatman Electrical Contractors for 25 years. He enjoyed Missionary trips, loved his family and beach trips. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earl and Beatrice Chatman; maternal grandparents, Vernon and Ethel Steen; a brother, Robert Chatman and his father-in-law, Cecil Ferguson Jr.. He is survived by his wife, Marietta  Ferguson Chatman; a son, Robert Allen Chatman and his wife, Jennifer, of Gray; a brother, Jim Chatman and his wife, Jane, Johnson City; a sister, Earlene Banks and her husband, LeeRoy, Limestone and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Chatman will be conducted 7:00 PM Monday, April 12, 2010 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with the Rev. Howard Estep and Dr. Tommy Holtzclaw officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 5:00 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Rodney Metcalf, Brian Ellis, Mark Tester, Wayne Tilson, Jerry Davis, Chris Ferrell, Mike Dearing and Wiley Gobble. Honorary pallbearers will be Supervisor Bill Manis, Jeff Smith Sr., Richard Birchfield, Junior Clark, Philip Almany, Tony Kilgore, Johnson City Power Board employees and all the East Tennessee Electrical Inspectors. Paul H. Cooper

Paul H. Cooper, 72, 3206 Unicoi Drive #5, Unicoi, TN died unexpectedly  Wednesday, April 7, 2010 in the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Avery County, NC but had lived in Unicoi County most of his life. Mr. Cooper was a son of the late Hobart and Faye Woody Cooper and had worked as a farmer most of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and loved his family, gardening and building bird houses. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Tim Cooper; a sister, Verna Buchanan and four brothers, Terry, Herman, Kenneth and Homer Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Mary Edwards Cooper; a daughter, Angie Stout, Unicoi; a son, David Cooper of the home; three brothers, Fred, John and Bobby Cooper all of Unicoi; four sisters, Emma Lou Sordino, Ann Ables both of Unicoi, Clara May Garcia, Adrian, MI and Norma Vinyard, Ennis, TX; five grandchildren, Heather Cooper, Tessa Whitson, Dalton, Barrett and Zoie Stout; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Cooper will be conducted Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with the Rev. Dallas Gregg officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until service time. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 11, 2010 in the Cooper family cemetery, Marbleton Road, Unicoi. Active pallbearers will be Dwight and Dustin Wilson, Zack and Coty Cooper, Dave Whitaker, Mike Tabor and Calvin Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy and Roy Edwards, Bryan Bradley and Ronnie Smith.
