Emma Whittimore

Emma Whittimore, 82, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at the home of a daughter. Emma was born July 29, 1927 in Mainz, West Germany. She was a daughter of the late George and Elisabeth Brodt Stumpf. Emma came to America in 1956 with her husband, David H. Whittimore (a retired World War II veteran), and their three children. Together, they raised eight children in Johnson City. In 1961, based on four qualifications: trustworthiness, service, leadership and patriotism, Emma’s entire family witnessed the presentation of the Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Medal and certificate presented to her by the Sarah Hawkins Chapter, DAR. Emma forged an honorable place for herself and her family in America. Unfortunate circumstances left Emma, the mother of eight children as the main support of the family. Her work as a domestic employee helped the family initially but Emma, who had taken nurse’s training in Germany prior to the outbreak of World War II, soon sought employment at the Johnson City Medical Center in 1963. She worked in the central supply section of the facility, where her sense of responsibility, pleasant disposition and industriousness had fixed her permanently in the affections of staff and patients alike. In addition to her regular duties, Emma served as a private duty nurse. Regardless of her long hours on duty, her children were the epitome of what every mother wishes her family could be. Emma eventually retired from the Johnson City Medical Center after serving the community for 27 years and she was a highly respected neighbor and friend to all. Emma was kind and gentle always having a good word for everyone. Always respecting of others. She always had a home cooked meal on her table on Sunday afternoons, inviting anyone in for a visit and to eat. During her last days on earth she would repeat, “I’ve lived a good and long life. I’m very blessed to still have all of my children around me and they come to visit. They’ve all got families, jobs and each other and are all doing well. God gave me a good life and I’m very fortunate to have my family near me all the time.” Emma was affectionately known as Gagi to her grandchildren. Emma never drove a car, never learned how to drive. Weighing this little known fact against her accomplishments during her life gives you an idea of how amazing this Momma/Gagi truly was. She will be missed, but her spirit lives on in her children. Emma was a longtime member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and committed her life to raising her children with faith in her Lord God, Jesus Christ. Emma raised all of her children to be self-sufficient, honest, hardworking and true to their word. She raised them in such a way that wherever we go, mentioning any of the Whittimore family brought comments of respect for the family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Whittimore, in 1975; a daughter, Mattie Ida Whittimore, in 1999; a sister, Else Roos, in 1990; and a brother, George Stumpf, in 2008. Survivors include three sons, Wilhelm (Bill) Whittimore and his wife, Irene, Gray, David Whittimore and his wife, Joan, Johnson City, and Guy Whittimore and his wife, Tina, of Elizabethton; four daughters, Elisabeth Hilbert and her husband, Fred, Gray, Emmaly Slone and her husband, Walter, Limestone, Cora May Moffitt and her husband, Buzie, Watauga, and Reata McGaha and her husband, Gordon, of Johnson City; twelve grandchildren, Wilhelm (Bill) Whittimore Jr., Virginia (Ginnie) Earp, Rhonda Renee Cooper, Sarina Whittimore, Sierra Whittimore, Angie Rankin, Heather Slone, Jessica Moffitt, Kristy Moffitt and Inez Moffitt; seven great-grandchildren, Emma B. McGaha, Nolan Rankin, Dustin and Tiana Whittimore, Morgan Wyatt Earp, Xander Laws and Zeke Slone.
